When the majority of Imperial students consider Silwood Park, they picture an abundant, enigmatic, and lush campus rich with wildlife and flora seldom found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are correct \u2013 every vision of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As an ambassador for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to spotlight the student experience, engagements, and community within our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, encompassing 77 hectares and showcasing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open grasslands. A brief inquiry on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations across a global network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on the campus, while a check on eBird lists 111 bird species documented on campus to date.<\/p>\n

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park is home to several long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most notable studies conducted here.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly hosts postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Most of us partake in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens that live behind our halls of residence<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 routinely convening to explore books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the plots in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation efforts for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in the activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park possesses its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities to foster a lively and engaging student experience! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also welcomed the annual Chinese New Year at the year’s outset, crafting dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. Community-organized celebrations for global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of festivities have also taken place.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite event on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s become a Silwood tradition that the losing teams from the pub quiz are responsible for setting the next one, and I proudly claim the title for having organized the most quizzes this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there’s always a great deal of fun to be found with wonderful company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively essence of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or deficient. In addition to the numerous happenings and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from around the globe. We all cherish nature, love our stunning campus grounds, and more importantly, appreciate each other\u2019s presence. We are a close-knit community that enjoys stargazing during the winter chill in the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending time<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
