When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a verdant, enchanting, and green campus brimming with wildlife and vegetation that is rarely found at other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I would like to bring attention to the student life, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research site, covering 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grasslands. A basic search on iNaturalist, an app that facilitates mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a social network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and a further search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified thus far.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is also the location of numerous long-term field research endeavors, with Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two prominent initiatives undertaken on-site.<\/p>\n

Student life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus predominantly hosts postgraduate students keen on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us are members of various clubs located at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 which looks after the chickens that are raised behind our student accommodations<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which meets regularly to discuss fascinating books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 which tends to the plots in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which organizes nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in the activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we also host clubs that partake in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which are played either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, we enjoy numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities to ensure a vibrant and enjoyable student life! In recent months, we held the Silwood language exchange, uniting our largely international community to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated our annual Chinese New Year festivity at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to create dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We have also hosted community-organized parties celebrating global events (such as Carnival), or parties thrown simply for the joy of partying.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite event on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood tradition that the losing teams of the pub quiz must organize the next one, and I can unashamedly say I have the highest number of pub quizzes set this year. Despite losing many pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always plenty of fun to be had with great company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my haven away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or lacking. In addition to the many events and activities, we have a friendly and welcoming community made up of students from around the globe. We all cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and more importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s company.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
