When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with wildlife and vegetation seldom found in other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, their perceptions are accurate \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As an ambassador of this lesser-known faction at Imperial, I want to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research hub, encompassing 77 hectares and showcasing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open grasslands. A quick lookup on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations with an online network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while an additional search on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been documented here so far.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily caters to postgraduate students passionate about projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us engage in various clubs headquartered at Silwood Park. Some prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for the care of poultry raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which meets regularly to discuss intriguing literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also get involved in clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have groups that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which happens to be my personal favorite!), taking place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Besides club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park features its own student council that organizes and manages these events to ensure a lively and engaging student atmosphere! Recently, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year event at the beginning of the year, where everyone joined in to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also held community-organized parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or gatherings simply for the enjoyment of socializing.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event must be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student body. It’s part of Silwood tradition that the losing team of the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly say that I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Despite failing many times due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always plenty of fun to be had with great company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my sanctuary away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively hub of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. Along with the multitude of events and activities, we foster a friendly and inviting community made up of students from all corners of the globe. We all share a passion for nature and cherish our stunning campus grounds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
