When the majority of Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus brimming with wildlife and vegetation that are rarely encountered at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I aim to shed light on the student lifestyle, activities, and atmosphere at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, encompassing 77 hectares and showcasing habitats including freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A brief query on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with a network of naturalists, uncovers that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on-site, while an additional search on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been identified to date.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park is also the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most notable studies undertaken here.<\/p>\n

Student life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus is primarily inhabited by postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us participate in several clubs based at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for the care of the chickens kept behind our residential halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly convenes to discuss literature of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 oversees the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizes nature walks and conservation efforts for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Additionally, we have informal clubs that participate in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place in the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and academic sessions, numerous community-led events occur on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council, which organizes and facilitates such activities, ensuring a lively and dynamic student life! In recent months, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone came together to make dumplings and couplets to welcome a new lunar year. We’ve also hosted community-organized parties celebrating diverse global events (such as Carnival) or simply gatherings organized for the joy of socializing.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite event on campus has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s a Silwood tradition that the losing team of the pub quiz organizes the next one, and I can proudly state I hold the record for the most quizzes set this year. Despite my repeated losses at various pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there’s always a great time to be had with wonderful company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. In addition to the myriad of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. We all share a love for nature, our stunning campus surroundings, and, most importantly, enjoy each other’s company.
