When students at Imperial picture Silwood Park, they see a lush, enigmatic, and green campus filled with distinctive flora and fauna, quite different from typical spots like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they’re right\u2014every image envisioned of Silwood Park rings true!<\/p>\n

As a spokesperson for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to shine a light on student life, activities, and the community at our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial’s outdoor laboratory, encompassing 77 hectares and showcasing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally with an online network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been documented on campus. Furthermore, a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been logged on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project standing out as two of the more famous projects carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us engage in a variety of clubs based at Silwood Park. Some prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to explore books from their reading list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also take part in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and lessons, we host a variety of community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities, ensuring a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we\u2019ve enjoyed the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the year’s start, where everyone came together to make dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We’ve also experienced community-organized parties celebrating global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of celebrating.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It’s become a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers must host the next one, and I can proudly say I hold the record for the most quizzes set this year. Even though I have lost many quizzes due to my limited trivia knowledge, there’s always plenty of enjoyment to be had with great company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the bustling vibes of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. Beyond the many events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. We all appreciate nature, value our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, savor each other\u2019s camaraderie. We are a close-knit community that delights in stargazing in the winter chill on the open field next to our bar, observing birds and mammals that visit our room windows.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
