When many students at Imperial envision Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, intriguing, and green campus bustling with flora and fauna often absent from other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they are correct \u2013 every representation of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our nature-rich campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring habitats like freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, a platform allowing users to document and share biodiversity observations globally within a social network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project among the more notable studies conducted onsite.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students passionate about ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us are spread across several clubs situated at Silwood Park. Some notable mentions are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 which looks after the chickens raised behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which meets regularly to discuss interesting titles from their reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 which manages the plots in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which organizes nature walks and conservation activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being incorporated into the broader Imperial student network, several of us are also members of and participate actively in clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we also have clubs that partake in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which are held either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in the indoor sports halls found in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, there are numerous community-led events occurring on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates these events to foster a dynamic and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share our languages and cultures over several weeks, alongside our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone united to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the onset of a new lunar year. Community-organized parties have also been held to celebrate various global festivities (such as Carnival), as well as parties simply for the enjoyment of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz arranged by our student community. A Silwood tradition dictates that the losers of the quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly say I’ve organized the most quizzes this year. Even though I’ve lost many quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, it\u2019s always an enjoyable experience shared with good friends over a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it’s situated a 30-minute walk from the lively pulse of civilization (e.g. the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt monotonous or lacking. Beyond<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
