When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enchanting, and green campus brimming with animals and plants rarely found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park is accurate!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I want to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor lab, covering 77 hectares and hosting environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app designed for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations globally through a social network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Further investigation on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been identified on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Remarkably, Silwood Park also serves as the location for several long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most well-known studies conducted here.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students keen on ecology, conservation, and evolution-related projects. Many of us engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for the chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly exploring books of interest from their reading list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation-focused activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also take part in the activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs participating in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and lectures, numerous community-led events occur on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates these events, ensuring a lively and engaging student life! In recent months, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks. We also kicked off the year with our annual Chinese New Year celebration, making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized gatherings commemorating various global celebrations (like Carnival) or parties simply for the joy of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event, however, is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that those who lose the pub quiz prepare the next one, and I can proudly claim the title for the highest number of pub quizzes organized this year. Despite losing many pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great fun surrounded by great company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively ambiance of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. Alongside the countless events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from around the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that delights in stargazing in the winter chill in the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our rooms.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
