When students at Imperial envision Silwood Park, they picture a lush, mysterious, and green campus bustling with wildlife and plant life, distinctly different from our other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are right\u2014every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a spokesperson for this lesser-known Imperial community, my goal is to showcase the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and comprising environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grasslands. A brief look on iNaturalist, an application dedicated to mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, eBird has documented 111 different bird species on site so far.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is home to several long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, both renowned projects conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students involved in ecology, conservation, and evolution work. Many of us engage in a variety of clubs at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for the chickens kept behind our accommodation blocks<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 holding regular discussions on intriguing books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation events for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also join and actively participate in clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs that partake in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), occurring either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in the nearby towns of Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, a variety of community-driven events take place on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and manages these activities to foster an engaging and vibrant student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community exchanged languages and cultures over a few weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration, during which everyone participated in making dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-sponsored parties celebrating global events (such as Carnival) or simply for the joy of dancing and socializing.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the teams with the lowest scores have to arrange the next quiz, and I can proudly say I\u2019ve set the highest number of quizzes this year. Despite frequently losing quizzes due to my weak general knowledge, there\u2019s always fun to be had with great company and a well-poured pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it lies a 30-minute walk from the lively pulse of civilization (e.g., the train station and closest village), life at Silwood Park never feels monotonous or boring. Alongside the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inviting community of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most crucially, each other\u2019s friendship. We\u2019re a close-knit group who relishes in stargazing during the winter chill on the open field next to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and sharing time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I prepare meals with my dear friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. Our gatherings are often joined by friends living nearby in other residence halls. After dinner, we typically engage in board games or watch films together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
