When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus filled with wildlife and plants that are rarely found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct, and every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known faction at Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland setting in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s natural laboratory, extending over 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grassfields. A quick search on iNaturalist, a platform for mapping and sharing biodiversity sightings worldwide within a social network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. An additional inquiry on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been noted on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also the location of various long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized projects carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students who are engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us participate in several clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable ones are:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for the care of the chickens residing behind our student accommodations<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly convenes to discuss various interesting reads<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 oversees the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranges nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us are also members and actively engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs that engage in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), taking place either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or within indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we have numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities, ensuring a lively and engaging student experience! In recent months, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community came together to share languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year gathering at the beginning of the year, where everyone came together to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also hosted community-organized parties to celebrate global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers are tasked with setting up the next one, and I can proudly claim the record for the most quizzes set this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my lack of general knowledge, there\u2019s always plenty of enjoyment to be found in good company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (such as the train station and nearby village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. In addition to the myriad of events and activities, we cultivate a warm and inviting community made up of students from across the globe.
