When the majority of Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic campus bustling with wildlife and plants seldom found at our other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park is accurate!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I want to shine a light on the student experience, activities, and camaraderie present at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research space, covering 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open fields. A quick lookup on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing global biodiversity observations, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, with an additional search on eBird highlighting 111 bird species identified to date.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park also hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more notable studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaged in ecological, conservation, and evolutionary projects. Most of us participate in several clubs based at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for caring for the chickens located behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which meets regularly to discuss selections from their reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student network, many of us are also affiliated with and actively engage in clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we also have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at the indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and coursework, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and oversees these activities, ensuring we enjoy a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, wherein our predominantly international community collaborated to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated our annual Chinese New Year festival at the beginning of the year, where everyone joined together to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We have also organized community gatherings for various global celebrations (like Carnival), or simply parties for the sake of having fun.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It has become a Silwood tradition that the losing team of the pub quiz is responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly assert that I have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite losing countless pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment to be found in good company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively essence of civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. Alongside the multitude of events and activities, we boast a friendly and inclusive community comprised of students from around the globe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
