When many students at Imperial think about Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with wildlife and plant life that is not commonly found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park is accurate!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I aim to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and includes habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open meadows. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for classifying and sharing biodiversity observations globally through a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been recorded on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also home to numerous long-term research projects, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies conducted on the premises.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus predominantly accommodates postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. The majority of us are involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 which takes care of the chickens located behind our residences<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which meets regularly to discuss intriguing literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 which tends to the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which organizes nature walks and conservation-focused activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in the activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we also have clubs involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either utilizing the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, we have various community-led events on campus. Silwood Park possesses its own student council that organizes and facilitates such initiatives to foster a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our primarily international community gathered to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the year’s start, where everyone came together to create dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also had community-organized gatherings celebrating events from across the globe (like Carnival) or parties held simply for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    However, my top campus event must be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers are responsible for hosting the next one, and I can proudly state I have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite my frequent losses due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment in good company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my sanctuary away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or unfulfilling. Beyond the many events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, take pride in our beautiful campus grounds, and, more importantly, appreciate each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that enjoys spending time together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
