When the majority of Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with wildlife and plants seldom found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to shine a light on the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, encompassing 77 hectares and showcasing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, an application that allows users to map and share biodiversity observations on a global scale alongside a social network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and an additional search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted thus far.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Silwood Park is the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies conducted here.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are affiliated with several clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for looking after the chickens housed behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who meet regularly to discuss various books of interest within their reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who oversee the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who arrange nature walks and conservation-themed activities for the students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us are also members of clubs based in South Kensington and actively engage in their activities!<\/p>\n

    In an informal capacity, we have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which are located either on the campus\u2019 multi-use games arena (MUGA) or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Besides club activities and lectures, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that orchestrates and supports such events to foster a lively and dynamic student atmosphere! In recent months, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks, as well as our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone collaborated to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized parties celebrating occasions from around the globe (like Carnival), or simply parties thrown for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    Nonetheless, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, run by our student body. It\u2019s ingrained in Silwood culture that the team finishing last in the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly say I have set the most pub quizzes this year. Despite coming in last on numerous occasions due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there is always enjoyable time to be had with great company and a lovely pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Though situated a 30-minute walk from the lively ambiance of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient.
