When students from Imperial envision Silwood Park, they picture a lush, enchanting, and green campus alive with wildlife and plants, distinctly different from our other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are right\u2014every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known section of Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares with environments that include freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open meadows. A search on iNaturalist, an application that facilitates mapping and sharing biodiversity observations with a global network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while eBird notes 111 bird species observed here thus far.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park also hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more notable studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus is predominantly occupied by postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many amongst us are involved in different clubs based at Silwood Park. Some prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly engaging in discussions about books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing plots in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation efforts for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have groups for activities such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which meet at either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club endeavors and lessons, we host a variety of community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council responsible for organizing and facilitating these events, ensuring an exciting and dynamic student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultural experiences over several weeks, along with our yearly Chinese New Year celebration, where everyone participated in making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also hosted community-organized celebrations for global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus gathering is the weekly pub quiz, run by our student body. A part of Silwood culture is that the losers of the pub quiz have to organize the next one, and I can proudly assert that I hold the record for the most quizzes set this year. Despite losing several due to my limited trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment to be had with excellent company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the closest village), living at Silwood Park never feels dull or lacking. With countless events and activities, we foster a friendly and welcoming community of students from various countries. We all share an appreciation for nature, our stunning campus surroundings, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a close-knit group that relishes stargazing in the chilly winter on the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
