When the majority of Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus filled with flora and fauna seldom found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a spokesperson for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I aim to shed light on the student experience, engagements, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse into Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open fields. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application dedicated to mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide within a network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further investigation on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been logged on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Silwood Park is the site of numerous long-term field research initiatives, with projects like the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized efforts conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Notable examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 which tends to the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which often convenes to discuss intriguing literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 which oversees the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which organizes nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, several of us also engage in the activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we also have groups participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and coordinates such activities, ensuring a lively and engaging student atmosphere! Recently, we\u2019ve held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, as well as our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to create dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Community-organized parties celebrating events from around the globe (like Carnival) or simply gatherings for the joy of partying have also taken place.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s part of Silwood tradition that the losing teams of the pub quiz must set the next one, and I can proudly declare the highest number of pub quizzes organized this year. Despite losing many pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always a great time to be had with good company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the bustling energy of civilization (such as the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or deficient. Alongside the myriad events and activities, we share a warm and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, each other\u2019s company.
