When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a rich, enigmatic, and green campus alive with wildlife and plants seldom found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are right\u2014every image of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known cohort at Imperial, I aim to showcase the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park functions as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and comprising habitats including freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick lookup on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, a review on eBird confirms that 111 bird species have been documented there.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also home to several long-term field research initiatives, such as the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students who are engaged in ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us are active in a range of clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss intriguing books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports halls in adjacent towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Aside from club engagements and classes, there are plenty of community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and oversees such activities to maintain a lively and exhilarating student life! Recently, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our primarily international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the year\u2019s onset, where everyone came together to create dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also held community-organized parties celebrating global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of social gatherings.<\/p>\n

    However, my absolute favorite campus activity has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a tradition at Silwood that those who lose the quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly say that I\u2019ve set the highest number of quizzes this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my poor general knowledge, there\u2019s always laughter with great company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively essence of civilization (such as the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. Beyond the many events and activities, we have a friendly and inclusive community of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, above all, each other\u2019s presence. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that delights in stargazing during the chilly winter nights on the open field next to our bar, observing the birds and wildlife that visit our room windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
