When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enchanting, and green campus bustling with wildlife and vegetation not often found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they\u2019re right \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known community within Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse into Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick exploration on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity findings with an online community of naturalists, discloses that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Furthermore, a query on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been documented on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is home to various long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most recognized projects carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary research. Most of us partake in multiple clubs located at Silwood Park. Some notable ones include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our residential halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 convening regularly to discuss literature of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the community garden allotments<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 planning nature walks and conservation events for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities from clubs situated in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs that partake in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), occurring either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and courses, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities to promote a dynamic and exciting student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated the Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, creating dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized parties celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    Nevertheless, my preferred campus event is the weekly pub quiz, orchestrated by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers organize the next one, and I can proudly claim to have set the most pub quizzes this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my inadequate general trivia prowess, there\u2019s always great fun with wonderful company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my home away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively charms of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or lacking. Beyond the abundance of events and activities, we share a warm and friendly community of students from all over the globe. We all adore nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that relishes stargazing in the winter chill in the open field beside our bar, watching the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and enjoying time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
