When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enchanting, and verdant campus filled with wildlife and plants rarely found at other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 and each depiction of Silwood Park holds truth!<\/p>\n

As an ambassador of this lesser-known community within Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with a community of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while an additional search on eBird shows 111 bird species documented to date.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Silwood Park is the venue for numerous extensive field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the most recognized projects carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily houses postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for caring for the chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who frequently meet to discuss intriguing literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who arrange nature walks and conservation activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also take part in and engage with clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either using the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Aside from club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that coordinates and supports such activities to maintain a lively and thrilling student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone came together to create dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We have also organized community events celebrating various global festivities (such as Carnival) or just parties for the sheer joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event must be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It has become part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers are responsible for organizing the next one, and I can proudly claim the record for the highest number of quizzes set this year. Despite failing many pub quizzes due to my lackluster trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment to be found in good company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. Beyond the myriad of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, relish each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tightly-knit community that enjoys spending evenings gazing at the stars in<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
