When students from Imperial picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus alive with distinctive wildlife and plant life, setting it apart from other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are spot on\u2014every depiction of Silwood Park rings true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known community within Imperial, I wish to shed light on student life, activities, and the community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Getting to Know Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments like freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick check on iNaturalist, an app that allows users to map and share global biodiversity observations with a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Furthermore, a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Even more fascinating, Silwood Park is home to numerous extensive field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two of the more prominent studies taking place here.<\/p>\n

The Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution studies. We are primarily organized into various clubs located at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 looking after the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss interesting reads<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 tending to the plots in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As members of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs partaking in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Alongside club activities and lectures, various community-driven events occur on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and supports such events, ensuring an energetic and vibrant student experience! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our yearly Chinese New Year celebration, where everyone came together to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Community-organized parties have also been held to celebrate global festivities (such as Carnival) or just for the joy of socializing.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It\u2019s a tradition at Silwood that the quiz losers must host the next one, and I can proudly say I\u2019ve set the most quizzes this year. Despite losing numerous quizzes due to my lack of trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment to be had with good friends and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively essence of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park is never dull or deficient. Beyond the myriad of events and activities, we share a warm and inviting community of students from around the globe. We all appreciate nature, our stunning campus surroundings, and, more crucially, each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that relishes stargazing in the winter chill on the open field next to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending time amongst fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
