When the majority of Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a lush, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with wildlife and flora that are rare at other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are right, and every mental image of Silwood Park is precise!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I aim to showcase the student life, activities, and the community that exists within our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park functions as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally with an online community of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, a check on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been logged on campus to date.<\/p>\n

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park is also home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students interested in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. The majority of us are engaged in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Notable examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for the care of the chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss intriguing books from their reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 tending to the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation-themed activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also participate in clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Unofficially, we also have groups involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, numerous community-led events take place on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities to promote a lively and enjoyable student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community gathered to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. Community-organized parties have also celebrated global festivities (like Carnival) or simply occurred for the joy of socializing.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus, however, must be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It is a part of Silwood culture that the losers of the pub quiz are responsible for organizing the next one, and I can proudly say I have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Though I have lost many pub quizzes due to my limited trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment to be had with wonderful company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or uninteresting. Alongside the various events and activities, we have a friendly and welcoming community made up of students from all corners of the globe. We all love nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and more importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s company.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
