When many students from Imperial think of Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, intriguing, and green campus alive with wildlife and plants rarely found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I wish to shine a light on the student life, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and hosting ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with an online network of nature enthusiasts, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while an additional search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified there to date.<\/p>\n

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park is the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us engage in several clubs operating at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 who care for the chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who meet regularly to discuss books that pique their interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who oversee the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who arrange nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also partake in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we also have clubs involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host a variety of community-led events on campus. Silwood Park features its own student council that organizes and facilitates such gatherings, ensuring a lively and engaging student experience! In recent months, we enjoyed the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community came together to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, where everyone united to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Community-organized parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply held for the joy of socializing have also taken place.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the losing team of the pub quiz must set the next one, and I can proudly say I have set the most pub quizzes this year. Even with many losses due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always plenty of fun to be had with great company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the bustling energy of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. Alongside the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. We all share a love for nature, as well as for our beautiful campus grounds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
