When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a lush, enchanting, and green campus bustling with wildlife and plant life seldom found on other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are spot on \u2013 every image formed of Silwood Park is indeed true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known community at Imperial, my intention is to showcase the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, encompassing 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations globally with a network of naturalists, uncovers that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Furthermore, a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project standing out as two of the more prominent studies conducted here.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily serves postgraduate students involved in projects focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are active in various clubs situated at Silwood Park. Highlighted examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 taking care of chickens that are raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 gathering regularly to discuss books of interest on their reading list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs participating in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host many community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and coordinates such events, ensuring a vibrant and dynamic student life! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and we celebrated the Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also organized parties in the community to celebrate global occurrences (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It’s a tradition at Silwood that the quiz losers are responsible for setting the next one, and I can proudly say I\u2019ve set the highest number of quizzes this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment to be found with good friends and a pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Though it is a 30-minute stroll from the lively buzz of civilization (e.g., the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or unexciting. Beyond the plethora of events and activities, we have a friendly and hospitable community of students from around the globe. We all cherish nature, our beautiful campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s company. We are a tight-knit community that enjoys stargazing during the winter chill on the open field next to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and spending moments with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
