When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they conjure an abundant, enigmatic, and verdant campus filled with wildlife and flora seldom encountered at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are spot-on \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known faction at Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing ecosystems like freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, a platform for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally within an online network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while an additional search on eBird confirms that 111 bird species have been noted on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution studies. A large number of us participate in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for the chickens kept behind our halls of residence<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss intriguing books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs involved in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports halls in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we have numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates such initiatives to ensure a vibrant and dynamic student life! In recent months, we\u2019ve experienced the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone collaborated to make dumplings and couplets to ring in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also hosted community-organized parties celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or simply gatherings for the love of festivities.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event, however, has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers set the next one, and I can proudly assert the highest number of pub quizzes arranged this year. Despite losing many pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment in good company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively energy of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt monotonous or uninteresting. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we share a warm and inviting community of students from various corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, each other\u2019s presence. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the winter chill on the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and spending time among<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
