When students from Imperial envision Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and green campus filled with wildlife and plants seldom encountered at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they\u2019re correct\u2014each portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a spokesperson for this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I aim to emphasize the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research hub, covering 77 hectares and encompassing various environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A brief investigation on iNaturalist, an app for cataloging and disseminating biodiversity findings globally among a network of naturalists, reveals 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi recorded on campus, while eBird documents 111 bird species noted to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is the site for numerous long-term field studies, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being prominent examples conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students with an interest in ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Among the notable clubs are:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also join in on clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have groups participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), taking place either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Along with club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and manages such events to ensure an engaging and dynamic student experience! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our yearly Chinese New Year celebration, where everyone made dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also held community-organized gatherings celebrating worldwide events (like Carnival) or simply out of the joy of socializing.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It has become tradition that the losers of the pub quiz prepare the next one, and I can honestly claim to have set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Even though I\u2019ve lost a considerable number of pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always plenty of laughter with great company and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the nearest town (including the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park remains anything but monotonous or uneventful. Alongside a multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from various corners of the globe. We share a passion for nature, cherish our beautiful campus, and, more importantly, value each other\u2019s presence. We are a closely-knit community that delights in stargazing under the winter sky on the open field next to our bar, observing birds and mammals from our room windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I cook alongside my dear friend from India, who shares my enthusiasm for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. More often than not, we are joined by friends residing nearby.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
