When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with fauna and flora rarely encountered at other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment at Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, events, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A basic inquiry on iNaturalist, a platform for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide alongside an online network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted up to this point.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being amongst the more recognized studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate scholars engaged in ecology, conservation, and evolution research. Many of us are members of various clubs situated at Silwood Park. Some prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 dedicated to caring for the chickens raised behind our dormitories<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who meet regularly to discuss captivating reads<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 responsible for the maintenance of the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who plan nature walks and conservation-based activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also participate in the activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    On an informal level, we have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either in the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Alongside club engagements and lessons, numerous community-led events are held on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and supports such activities, promoting a lively and dynamic student life! Recently, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international population shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone came together to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also seen community-organized festivities celebrating global events (like Carnival) or parties simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers set the subsequent one, and I can proudly state I hold the record for the most quizzes set this year. Despite losing many pub quizzes due to my poor general knowledge, there\u2019s always great fun to be had with good friends and a fine pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my sanctuary away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively surroundings of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or unexciting. In addition to the myriad of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. We all adore nature, love our stunning campus grounds, and more importantly, cherish each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tightly-knit community that enjoys stargazing in the wintry chill on the open fields.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
