When students from Imperial envision Silwood Park, they picture a lush, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with distinctive plant and animal life, in stark contrast to what is typically found at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are indeed correct\u2014each depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, my goal is to showcase the student experience, activities, and the community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats including freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations globally with an online community of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Furthermore, eBird indicates that 111 species of birds have been documented on campus to date.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s more fascinating is that Silwood Park is home to various long-term field research projects, such as the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, both renowned initiatives conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly caters to postgraduate students passionate about ecology, conservation, and evolution initiatives. Many of us engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Notable examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly discussing captivating books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation efforts for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also participate in and actively involve ourselves in clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have sports clubs such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which happens to be my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, we host a variety of community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such activities to cultivate a lively and enriching student life! Recently, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the start of the year, where we made dumplings and couplets to greet the upcoming lunar year. We\u2019ve also organized community parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus activity is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a part of Silwood culture that those who lose the quiz must set the next one, and I can proudly assert that I hold the record for the most quizzes set this year. Even though I often lose due to my lackluster general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment to be found with good company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park never feels monotonous or deficient. Alongside various events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus grounds, and above all, each other\u2019s companionship. We form a close-knit community that delights in stargazing in the winter chill in the open field beside our bar, observing birds and mammals grace our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I prepare meals with my dear friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
