When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they think of a vibrant, enchanting, and green campus filled with wildlife and plants rarely found on other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they’re correct \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I aim to showcase the student life, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open meadows. A quick search on iNaturalist, a platform for recording and sharing biodiversity insights with a global network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. An additional search on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been noted on campus to date.<\/p>\n

More interestingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more distinguished studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mostly accommodates postgraduate students engaged in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us participate in multiple clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss interesting books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 taking care of the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 planning nature walks and conservation initiatives for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    On an informal basis, we have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host several community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities, ensuring a lively and dynamic student experience! In the past few months, we’ve enjoyed the Silwood language exchange, where our mainly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the year’s beginning, where everyone gathered to prepare dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We’ve also organized community parties to celebrate global events (such as Carnival) or simply parties for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, run by our student community. It’s part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers plan the next one, and I can proudly say I\u2019ve set the most pub quizzes this year. Despite losing countless pub quizzes due to my lack of general knowledge, there\u2019s always laughter and enjoyment with great company over a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively essence of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. In addition to the myriad events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community of students from all corners of the globe. We all share a passion for nature, our stunning campus surroundings, and, more significantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that relishes stargazing in the winter chill on the open field adjacent to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
