When students from Imperial imagine Silwood Park, they picture a lush, intriguing, and green campus filled with distinctive plant and animal life, quite different from what is usually found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are spot on\u2014every picture painted of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, my goal is to shed light on the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park functions as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick look at iNaturalist, an app dedicated to mapping and sharing biodiversity observations globally with a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Additionally, eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

Remarkably, Silwood Park also houses numerous long-term field research endeavors, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two of the more prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Campus Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students engaged in ecology, conservation, and evolution studies. Many of us take part in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 taking care of the hens raised behind our dorms<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to chat about interesting reads<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the plots in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for students on the Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also join clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have sports clubs like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), hosted either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, numerous community-driven events take place on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these happenings, ensuring a lively and vibrant student experience! Recently, we hosted a Silwood language exchange, where our international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, and our yearly Chinese New Year celebration, where everyone came together to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also organized community gatherings in celebration of global events (such as Carnival) or simply for the joy of festive gatherings.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, put together by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers must organize the next one, and I can proudly state that I have set the highest number of quizzes this year. Despite failing numerous quizzes due to my lack of trivia knowledge, there is always great fun to be had with good friends and a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the bustling excitement of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park never feels dull or lacking. Alongside countless events and activities, we enjoy a warm and inviting community of students from all corners of the globe. We all appreciate nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, most importantly, each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a close-knit group that delights in stargazing in the winter chill in the open field near our bar, observing birds and mammals grace our windows, and spending time with fellow nature lovers.<\/p>\n
