When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they conjure up an idyllic, enigmatic, and verdant campus brimming with wildlife and flora not typically found at other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 each depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known faction within Imperial, I aim to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems like freshwater streams, ponds, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an app designed for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide within a community of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus; an additional search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park boasts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two prominent undertakings conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

The student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students keen on ecology, conservation, and evolution initiatives. Most of us engage in several clubs established at Silwood Park. Highlighted examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens raised behind our living accommodations<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 routinely discussing captivating reads<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation endeavors for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also partake in activities organized by clubs in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have groups participating in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my all-time favorite!), whether at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports venues in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, numerous community-led events take place on campus. Silwood Park features its own student council that organizes and facilitates such events to ensure a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we\u2019ve organized the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the year’s start, where everyone came together to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also hosted community-driven parties celebrating various global festivities (like Carnival) or gatherings simply for the enjoyment of having a good time.<\/p>\n

    <pHowever, my favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a part of Silwood culture that those who lose the pub quiz are responsible for setting up the next one, and I can proudly state that I hold the record for the most quizzes set this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my lack of trivia expertise, there\u2019s always a delightful atmosphere with great company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my home away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute trek from the lively pulse of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed monotonous or unexciting. In addition to the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and inviting community made up of students from around the globe. We all cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus landscape, and most importantly, enjoy each other’s company. We\u2019re a close-knit group that delights in stargazing during the chilly winters in the open field beside our bar, watching the birds and mammals that visit our room windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
