When the majority of Imperial’s students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus abundant with extraordinary wildlife and flora rarely seen at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they are right\u2014every representation of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice from this lesser-known Imperial community, I aim to showcase the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our nature-centric campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor experimental site, covering 77 hectares and comprising habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, a platform for cataloging and sharing global biodiversity data with a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. A further search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been observed on-site to date.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, including Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, both of which are well-established studies conducted on location.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus chiefly accommodates postgraduate scholars focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us are active in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples comprise:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently conversing about books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 steering the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation efforts for students at Silwood Park.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the wider Imperial student body, a lot of us also engage in clubs situated in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    In informal settings, we have sports organizations like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either at the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports venues in surrounding towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Besides club activities and classes, there are several community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that arranges and facilitates these occurrences to ensure a lively and vibrant student atmosphere! Recently, we’ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community came together to share languages and cultures over several weeks. We also marked the Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, preparing dumplings and couplets to celebrate the new lunar year. Additionally, we’ve thrown community-organized parties to honor global festivities (such as Carnival) or simply out of a love for gatherings.<\/p>\n

    My preferred on-campus occurrence is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that those who lose the quiz are responsible for organizing the next one, and I can proudly say that I hold the record for the highest number of quizzes set this year. Even though I\u2019ve lost a number of quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment with excellent company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it’s a 30-minute stroll from the bustling energy of civilized areas (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dreary or absent. Along with a plethora of events and activities, we boast a warm and inviting community made up of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus surroundings, and, more significantly, each other’s company. We\u2019re a close-knit group that delights in stargazing in the winter chill on the open field adjacent to our pub, watching birds and mammals grace our room windows, and spending time with fellow nature aficionados.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I prepare meals with my dear friend from India, who shares my enthusiasm for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We are often joined by<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
