When many Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enigmatic campus brimming with wildlife and plants that are rarely found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In numerous aspects, they are right \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to shine a light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing worldwide biodiversity observations within a network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been identified on campus, while a further inquiry on eBird discloses that 111 bird species have been noted thus far.<\/p>\n

Importantly, Silwood Park is also home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more renowned studies carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students who are keen on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us participate in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for caring for the chickens raised behind our student accommodation<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 convening regularly to discuss books of interest from their reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage with and take part in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we host clubs focused on sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place on the multi-use games area (MUGA) located on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Alongside club activities and classes, we have numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that arranges and supports such activities, ensuring we have a lively and stimulating student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone came together to create dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized gatherings celebrating events from around the globe (such as Carnival) or parties thrown simply for the enjoyment of celebrating.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event undoubtedly is the weekly pub quiz organized by our student community. It has become Silwood tradition that the losers of the pub quiz must prepare the next one, and I can confidently claim the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Even with my numerous defeats due to limited general trivia knowledge, there’s always a great time to be had with delightful company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although it is a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of urban areas (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt routine or devoid of excitement. In addition to the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from around the world.
