When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with wildlife and flora seldom encountered at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application designed for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations globally within an online community of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while an additional search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been documented thus far.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park also hosts numerous long-term field research initiatives, with Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus predominantly houses postgraduate students focused on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Notable examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 dedicated to caring for the chickens nurtured behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which regularly convenes to discuss intriguing books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 responsible for overseeing the allotments in our communal garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which coordinates nature walks and conservation-related activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities with clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Unofficially, we have clubs that participate in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either using the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates various activities to cultivate a vibrant and engaging student life! Recently, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, as well as our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, during which everyone gathered to create dumplings and couplets to ring in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized gatherings celebrating events from around the globe (such as Carnival) or just parties organized for the sheer joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers must organize the next quiz, and I can proudly assert that I\u2019ve set the most pub quizzes this year. Even though I\u2019ve lost numerous quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always plenty of fun to be had with good friends and a great pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll to the bustling atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. Apart from the many events and activities, we enjoy a warm and friendly community of students from all corners of the globe. We all share a love for nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, cherish each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tightly-knit community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
