When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they envision a lush, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with wildlife and vegetation that differs from what is found at South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are right\u2014every image that comes to mind about Silwood Park is spot on!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, I aim to showcase the student life, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park functions as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, extending across 77 hectares and comprising habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide within a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, eBird indicates the presence of 111 bird species on campus.<\/p>\n

Even more fascinating, Silwood Park is home to many long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two of the more prominent studies carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly houses postgraduate scholars interested in ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. A lot of us belong to various clubs located at Silwood Park. Notable examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 taking care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss interesting literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 tending to the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation events for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs participating in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either in the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and classes, we have a plethora of community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and supports such initiatives, ensuring a dynamic and exhilarating student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks. We also welcomed the annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, preparing dumplings and couplets to celebrate the new lunar year. Additionally, we\u2019ve had community-organized celebrations for global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of social gatherings.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood culture that those who lose the quiz set the following one, and I can proudly state I\u2019ve set the most quizzes this year. Despite losing many quizzes owing to my limited general trivia knowledge, the fun with good friends and a nice pint of beer is always present.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although situated a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient. Beyond the myriad of events and activities, we boast a warm and inviting community of students hailing from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus surroundings, and, importantly, the company of one another. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that relishes stargazing in the chilly winter air on the open field adjacent to our bar, observing birds and mammals gracing our windows, and spending quality time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
