When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a rich, enchanting, and green campus filled with wildlife and plant life that isn\u2019t typically found at our other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are right \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I aim to emphasize student life, activities, and community at our nature park campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, encompassing 77 hectares and showcasing habitats such as freshwater streams, ponds, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open fields. A simple search on iNaturalist, an app used for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with a network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while further investigation on eBird shows that 111 bird species have been documented on site to date.<\/p>\n

Fascinatingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more distinguished studies conducted here.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaged in ecology, conservation, and evolutionary research. Many of us are active in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable ones include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 looking after the chickens that are raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in the activities of clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host many community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and manages such events, ensuring a lively and engaging student experience! In recent months, we had the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community came together to share languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, making dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also had community-organized celebrations for global festivities (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of parties.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus, however, has to be the weekly pub quiz organized by our student community. It has become part of Silwood culture that those who lose the pub quiz must host the next one, and I can proudly claim to have set the most pub quizzes this year. Even though I have lost numerous pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always a great time to be had with good friends and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the bustling activities of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or unexciting. Alongside the multitude of events and activities, we have a friendly and welcoming community made up of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, enjoy one another’s company. We are a close-knit community that relishes stargazing in the winter chill on the open field next to our bar, observing the<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
