When students from Imperial picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus alive with distinct plant and animal life, in stark contrast to other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are right\u2014every mental image formed of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, I strive to showcase the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park functions as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats like freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, an app for cataloging and sharing biodiversity insights globally with a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, a check on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified on our grounds so far.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also home to numerous long-term research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are among the most renowned studies conducted here.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students working on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. A lot of us actively participate in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 gathering regularly to discuss intriguing books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation efforts for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As members of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities from clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs focusing on sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities and lessons, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and supports such activities, contributing to a lively and dynamic student life! Recently, we conducted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration, during which we made dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also thrown community-organized parties to celebrate global events (such as Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition for the quiz losers to host the next one, and I proudly hold the record for the most quizzes set this year. Despite losing many quizzes due to my limited trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always plenty of fun in good company and enjoying a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away From Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it’s a 30-minute walk from the lively buzz of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt boring or lacking. Along with countless events and activities, we nurture a warm and inviting community of students from all over the globe. We all have a passion for nature, appreciate our beautiful campus landscape, and, most importantly, treasure one another\u2019s company. We form a tight-knit community that revels in stargazing under the winter stars on the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n
