When the majority of Imperial students ponder Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with wildlife and plants that are rarely encountered on other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds truth!<\/p>\n

As an advocate for this lesser-known faction at Imperial, I would like to showcase the student life, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research center, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A basic search on iNaturalist, an app dedicated to mapping and sharing biodiversity sightings globally with a digital social network of naturalists, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and a further inquiry on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been documented thus far.<\/p>\n

Of particular interest, Silwood Park is the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more prominent projects conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily serves postgraduate students with interests in ecology, conservation, and evolution-related projects. Most of us are involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 dedicated to the care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who meet regularly to discuss books of interest from their reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who oversee the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which organizes nature walks and conservation-focused activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in club activities based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we also have groups that participate in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which are held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at the indoor sports facilities located in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Alongside club activities and academic lessons, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and promotes such activities, fostering a lively and dynamic student life! In recent months, we\u2019ve facilitated the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the start of the year, bringing everyone together to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Additionally, we\u2019ve had community-organized parties commemorating events from around the globe (such as Carnival), or simply gatherings held for the joy of celebrations.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus, however, has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a part of Silwood culture that the losers of the pub quiz are responsible for setting up the next one, and I can proudly claim the highest number of pub quizzes organized this year. Even though I\u2019ve lost many pub quizzes due to my inadequate general knowledge, there\u2019s always a great time to be had with good friends and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or lacking. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a warm and inclusive community consisting of students from across the globe.
