When students from Imperial imagine Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus filled with distinctive wildlife and plant life, in stark contrast to South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are right\u2014every depiction of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known Imperial community, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Presenting Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial’s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woods, and expansive grasslands. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, an application for tracking and sharing global biodiversity observations, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been registered on campus. Moreover, eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been documented here.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is home to several long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are two prominent on-site endeavors.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution initiatives. Many of us are active in various clubs located at Silwood Park. Some noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 nurturing chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly engaging in discussions about interesting literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 tending to plots in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation events for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also take part in clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have teams for sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, there are numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and facilitates activities to ensure a dynamic and engaging student life! Recently, we’ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration, during which we prepared dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We’ve also enjoyed community-hosted parties to commemorate global events (such as Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It’s a part of Silwood culture that those who lose the quiz arrange the next one, and I can proudly state that I’ve set the highest number of quizzes this year. Even though I often lose due to my limited trivia knowledge, there’s always enjoyment in great company and a pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Away-from-Home Sanctuary<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute trek from civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park never feels monotonous or stale. In addition to countless events and activities, we have a friendly, inclusive community of students from across the globe. We all appreciate nature, our stunning campus, and each other’s company. We’re a tightly-knit group that relishes stargazing in winter on the open field adjacent to our bar, watching birds and mammals come to our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I cook alongside my dear Indian friend who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We are frequently joined by friends who live a short walk away in nearby halls. After dinner, we generally enjoy playing board games or watching movies together. Living on Silwood Park Campus truly encapsulates a serene, tranquil, and picturesque lifestyle.
