When the majority of Imperial students imagine Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enchanting campus rich with wildlife and vegetation rarely found on other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, their perceptions are valid\u2014every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to illuminate the student experience, activities, and sense of community at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Introducing Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and encompassing various habitats including freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide within a social network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Additionally, an inquiry on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been identified here so far.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also the venue for numerous long-term field research endeavors, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more prominent studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaged in projects focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 which looks after the chickens found behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which meets regularly to discuss selected reading materials<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 which oversees the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which organizes nature walks and environmentally-focused activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Part of the broader Imperial student community, several of us are also members and frequently partake in events hosted by clubs in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Additionally, we have informal clubs for sports including badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in neighboring towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Beyond club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such initiatives to cultivate a lively and engaging student atmosphere! Recently, we conducted the Silwood language exchange, where our primarily international community united to share languages and cultures over a series of weeks. We also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year event at the beginning of the year, uniting to make dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Additionally, we\u2019ve organized community parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply parties for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus activity has got to be the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood tradition that the teams losing the pub quiz must organize the next one, and I can proudly assert I\u2019ve set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Although I\u2019ve lost many pub quizzes due to my inadequate general knowledge, there’s always great enjoyment to be found in good company and a quality pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although it\u2019s situated a 30-minute stroll from the lively buzz of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or insufficient.
