When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus full of wildlife and flora not typically found at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park is true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to shine a light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open fields. A quick search on iNaturalist, a platform for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations globally within a naturalist community, indicates that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been noted on campus. A further exploration through eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been recorded on campus to date.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Silwood Park is also home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more notable studies carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students who are keen on projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Most of us belong to various clubs based at Silwood Park. Key examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for the care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 which convenes regularly to discuss intriguing literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature excursions and conservation-centered activities for students on the Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in activities with clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have groups that take part in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we hold numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its dedicated student council that coordinates and promotes these activities to foster a lively and engaging student environment! In recent months, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, bringing our predominantly international community together to share languages and cultures over several weeks. We also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, where participants made dumplings and couplets to ring in the new lunar year. Furthermore, we\u2019ve organized community-driven celebrations for various global events (like Carnival) or simply parties thrown for the joy of it.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus, however, has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s part of Silwood tradition that the quiz losers organize the next one, and I can proudly claim the title for the highest number of quizzes set this year. Despite losing multiple pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great enjoyment to be found in good company and a quality pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (for example, the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or deficient. Beyond the array of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and hospitable community made up of students from around the globe. We all share a love for nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and, more crucially, value each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
