When students from Imperial picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus filled with wildlife and plants not typically found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct\u2014every representation of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known faction within Imperial, I wish to shed light on the student experience, activities, and community at our natural park campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Meet Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and showcasing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” woodland, and expansive grasslands. A brief exploration on iNaturalist, an application designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with a network of naturalists, reveals 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi identified on campus. Additionally, a search on eBird uncovers 111 bird species documented on the premises thus far.<\/p>\n

More fascinatingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-standing field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, which are two prominent on-site endeavors.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students eager to engage in ecology, conservation, and evolution studies. Many of us are involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 engaging in discussions about books of interest<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing allotments in our communal garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation projects for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, a number of us also take part in clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have sports clubs such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my favorite!), taking place either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Beyond club activities and academic lessons, there are many community-driven events held on campus. Silwood Park operates its own student council that organizes and manages activities to ensure an enriching student experience! Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community came together to share languages and cultures over several weeks, as well as our annual Chinese New Year celebration, where we made dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. Community-organized gatherings have also celebrated global events (such as Carnival) or simply brought us together for the joy of festivities.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a part of Silwood tradition that the quiz losers arrange the next one, and I can proudly say I\u2019ve set the most quizzes this year. Although I\u2019ve lost many due to limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s consistently enjoyment in good company with a pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the nearest village and train station, life at Silwood Park is never dull or insufficient. Along with a multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly, inviting community of students from various corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, our stunning campus, and, importantly, each other\u2019s companionship. We are a tight-knit group relishing the winter starry nights in the open field next to our bar, observing birds and mammals at our windows, and connecting with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I prepare meals with my close friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We are frequently joined by friends from nearby residence halls. After dinner, we usually engage in board games or watch movies together. Living on Silwood Park Campus is the embodiment<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
