When Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enchanting, and green campus rich with distinct flora and fauna, unlike those at South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they’re correct\u2014Silwood Park is just as envisioned!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known Imperial community, I aim to showcase the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Get to Know Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and expansive grasslands. A quick look on iNaturalist, an app for recording and sharing biodiversity observations globally, shows 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi documented on campus. A search on eBird reveals 111 bird species noted so far.<\/p>\n

Silwood Park is also the site for many enduring field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two prominent studies conducted on location.<\/p>\n

Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolution research. We engage in several clubs based at Silwood Park, such as:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently discussing intriguing books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the community garden plots<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation initiatives for students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student community, many of us also engage in clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have sports clubs for badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held at the campus multi-use games arena (MUGA) or in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Apart from club activities, we organize many community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that manages activities to foster a lively student life. Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration, crafting dumplings and couplets to welcome the lunar new year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized festivities for global occasions (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus occurrence is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that quiz losers organize the following one, and I proudly hold the record for the highest number of quizzes set this year. Despite struggling in many quizzes due to my limited trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment in great company and a pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although just a 30-minute stroll from the lively ambiance of civilization (e.g., train station and closest village), life at Silwood Park never feels dull. Along with an array of events and activities, we foster a cordial, inclusive community of students from across the globe. We all cherish nature, our beautiful campus, and each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a tight-knit group enjoying stargazing in winter, observing birds and mammals from our windows, and sharing moments with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I cook alongside my dear Indian friend who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. We\u2019re often joined by friends residing just a short walk away in neighboring residence halls. After our meal, we usually indulge in board games or watch movies together. Residing on Silwood Park Campus embodies a serene, tranquil, and picturesque life. In winter, this is complemented by the cozy warmth of heaters throughout our residence halls and campus buildings.<\/p>\n
