When many Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus rich with wildlife and plants that are rarely found at other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice from this lesser-known section of Imperial, I am eager to showcase the student experience, activities, and spirit of community at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and incorporating environments such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive meadows. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, an application designed for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations globally with a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Additionally, a search on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have been documented here so far.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Silwood Park is the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized studies conducted on site.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate students focused on ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Many of us are involved in various organizations based at Silwood Park. Some notable examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 which cares for the chickens housed behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 that meets regularly to talk about intriguing reads on their list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 responsible for the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 which arranges nature walks and conservation activities for the students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the broader Imperial student body, several of us also engage in activities with clubs located in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs that partake in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), which take place either at the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or within the indoor sports halls in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we have many events organized by the community on campus. Silwood Park boasts its student council that coordinates and supports such happenings, fostering a dynamic and exciting student experience! Recently, we organized the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community came together over several weeks to share languages and cultures, and we celebrated our annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year, where everyone united to create dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Additionally, we\u2019ve had community-led celebrations recognizing global events (like Carnival), or gatherings simply for the sake of enjoyment.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus, however, has to be the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It is a Silwood tradition that the teams with the lowest scores from the pub quiz are tasked with organizing the next one, and I can proudly assert that I have set the most quizzes this year. Despite being defeated in numerous quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, there\u2019s always a great time to be had with fantastic company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively energy of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or wanting. Alongside the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inclusive community made up of students from around the globe. We all appreciate nature and cherish our stunning campus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
