When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they imagine a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with wildlife and vegetation rarely found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known enclave within Imperial, I wish to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community that thrive at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems like freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grasslands. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, an application that enables users to map and share biodiversity observations globally with a digital community of naturalists, reveals that a total of 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Additionally, a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus thus far.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park is also the venue for numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily hosts postgraduate scholars interested in endeavors related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are spread out across various clubs situated at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for the care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who convene regularly to debate books of interest from their reading selection<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 managing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being integrated into the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in and actively participate in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    In addition, we have informal clubs that partake in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), located either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or at the indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Beyond club activities and educational sessions, numerous community-led events occur on campus. Silwood Park hosts its own student council that coordinates and facilitates such events to guarantee a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international community united to share our languages and cultures over several weeks, and also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year gathering at the year\u2019s start, where everyone came together to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the dawn of a new lunar year. We\u2019ve also organized community parties to commemorate various global festivities (such as Carnival) or parties simply for the joy of celebrating.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It\u2019s a part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers are required to host the next event, and I can proudly state that I\u2019ve set the highest number of pub quizzes this year. Despite frequently losing at various pub quizzes due to my lack of general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment to be found with great company and a good pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my home away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n
