When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a verdant, intriguing, and green campus bustling with wildlife and vegetation rarely found at other campuses like South Kensington or White City. In numerous respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this lesser-known Imperial community, I wish to spotlight the student experience, events, and community that flourish at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An introduction to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and featuring habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grassland. A quick search on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide within an online network of naturalists, reveals that a total of 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, with a further search on eBird indicating that 111 species of birds have been noted so far.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park also hosts many long-term field research projects, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more recognized initiatives conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students engaging in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 responsible for the care of the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who convene regularly to discuss books of interest from their reading lists<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who tend to the allotments within our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation-focused activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us are also partakers of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we also have clubs engaging in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Beyond club activities and classes, a variety of community-led events take place on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates these activities to ensure a vibrant and dynamic student life! Recently, we\u2019ve held the Silwood language exchange, a gathering of our largely international community to share languages and cultures over a few weeks, along with our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone united to make dumplings and couplets to welcome in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized parties celebrating occasions from around the globe (like Carnival), and parties simply for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    My favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, put together by our student community. It\u2019s a part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers must organize the next one, and I can proudly claim the most pub quizzes set this year. Despite losing at many pub quizzes due to my limited knowledge of general trivia, there\u2019s always great enjoyment with good company over a nice pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my home away from home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s situated a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (e.g., the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
