When students from Imperial picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enigmatic, and green campus alive with distinctive wildlife and vegetation, differing from other locations like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they\u2019re correct \u2013 every portrayal of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As an advocate for this lesser-known faction of Imperial, I would like to emphasize the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing ecosystems such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive meadows. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application designed for documenting and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with a community of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Additionally, a search on eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been noted to date.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is home to various long-term field research initiatives, including Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two prominent studies carried out on the premises.<\/p>\n

Life as a student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students with an interest in projects related to ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us engage in several clubs hosted at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for the chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly discussing interesting reads<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation activities for Silwood Park students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As members of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also join clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs involved in sports such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), based either in the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we have several community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council, which organizes and facilitates such events to ensure lively and engaging student life! In recent months, we held a Silwood language exchange, where our international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, alongside our yearly Chinese New Year celebration, where everyone gathered to prepare dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also hosted community-organized parties celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gatherings.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, arranged by our student community. It’s part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers set the next round, and I can proudly declare I’ve set the most quizzes this year. Despite losing countless quizzes due to my limited trivia knowledge, there’s always enjoyment with good company and a fine pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the lively buzz of civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed monotonous or insufficient. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we enjoy a warm and friendly community of students from around the globe. We share a love for nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, each other\u2019s company. We form a close-knit community relishing stargazing under the winter chill in the open field next to our bar, observing birds and mammals gracing our window views, and spending time among fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I prepare meals with my dear friend from India, who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
