When many Imperial students envision Silwood Park, they picture a lush, enchanting, and green campus alive with wildlife and flora not typically found at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In numerous ways, they are right\u2014every representation of Silwood Park is indeed accurate!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known Imperial community, my goal is to showcase the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park operates as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and open pastures. A brief exploration on iNaturalist, an app designed for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide with a network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. Moreover, a search on eBird reveals that 111 bird species have already been noted on campus.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Silwood Park is home to several long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, two of the more famous studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Experiencing Student Life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus is mainly occupied by postgraduate students focused on projects in ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us engage in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Notable examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 caring for the chickens housed behind our residential halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss interesting reads<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 organizing nature walks and conservation initiatives for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the wider Imperial student body, many of us also get involved in clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs that partake in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), located either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host many community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and coordinates these events, ensuring a lively and engaging student life! In recent months, we’ve conducted the Silwood language exchange, where our largely international group shared languages and cultures over several weeks, as well as our annual Chinese New Year celebration, where everyone came together to make dumplings and couplets in honor of the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized gatherings celebrating global festivities (such as Carnival) or simply embracing the joy of parties.<\/p>\n

    Nonetheless, my favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, facilitated by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition that the quiz losers must organize the next one, and I can proudly say I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Although I often lose due to my weak general knowledge, there\u2019s always enjoyment to be found with good friends and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (for instance, the train station and the closest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt monotonous or insufficient. Beyond the myriad events and activities, we foster a warm and friendly community consisting of students from across the globe. We all appreciate nature, adore our stunning campus surroundings, and, most importantly, value each other\u2019s company. We\u2019re a tightly-knit community that delights in stargazing during the chilly winter nights in the open field next to our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and spending time with fellow nature lovers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
