When the majority of Imperial students think about Silwood Park, they picture a verdant, enigmatic, and green campus bustling with wildlife and plants not typically found at other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

An overview of Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research station, covering 77 hectares and featuring ecosystems like freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and open meadows. A quick inquiry on iNaturalist, an app designed for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations across a global network of naturalists, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, and a further look at eBird indicates that 111 bird species have been registered to date.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park is also home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash’s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two prominent studies carried out on-site.<\/p>\n

Student life at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students engaged in ecology, conservation, and evolutionary studies. Most of us are involved in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 frequently discussing intriguing literature<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As members of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we participate in clubs that focus on sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we enjoy many community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park boasts its own student council that organizes and supports such events to ensure a vibrant and lively student atmosphere! Recently, we held a language exchange where our predominantly international community shared languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also rang in the annual Chinese New Year at the beginning of the year by making dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized parties celebrating global occasions (like Carnival) or simply parties for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    However, my favorite campus event is the weekly pub quiz, hosted by our student community. It’s a Silwood tradition that the losing team of the pub quiz sets the next one, and I can proudly say I hold the record for the most pub quizzes set this year. Even though I\u2019ve lost many pub quizzes due to my lack of general knowledge, the experience is always filled with laughter, great company, and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively atmosphere of civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or inadequate. Alongside numerous events and activities, we cultivate a warm and inviting community comprised of students from around the globe. We all have a passion for nature, our stunning campus landscape, and, more significantly, each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a close-knit group that delights in stargazing during the winter chill in the open spaces beside our bar, observing birds and mammals outside our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
