When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a lush, enigmatic, and green campus brimming with wildlife and flora, in contrast to our other campuses such as South Kensington or White City. They are correct in many ways \u2013 every vision of Silwood Park is spot on!<\/p>\n

As a member of this lesser-known community at Imperial, I seek to showcase the student experience, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcoming to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, spanning 77 hectares and encompassing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d forest, and open grasslands. A brief search on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing global biodiversity observations within an online network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, while an eBird search indicates that 111 bird species have been noted on campus up to now.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also home to several long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being two of the more distinguished projects taking place on-site.<\/p>\n

Student Experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus mainly accommodates postgraduate students who are passionate about ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Most of us take part in various clubs based at Silwood Park. Some standout examples include:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 meeting regularly to discuss interesting reads<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 coordinating nature walks and conservation events for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As part of the larger Imperial student body, many of us also get involved in activities of clubs situated in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Informally, we have clubs focused on sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), held either on the multi-use games area (MUGA) at our campus or in indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and facilitates such activities, fostering a lively and engaging student life! Recently, we\u2019ve hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration at the beginning of the year, where everyone made dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also had community-organized parties celebrating global events (like Carnival) or simply for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, organized by our student community. It\u2019s a part of Silwood culture that the losers of the quiz must arrange the next one, and I can proudly declare that I have organized the most quizzes this year. Despite my many losses due to limited trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always a great time with wonderful company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Home Away from Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk away from the lively atmosphere of civilization (such as the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never felt dull or insufficient. Alongside numerous events and activities, we enjoy a friendly and inclusive community of students from all over the globe. We all share a love for nature, our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, each other\u2019s friendship. We form a close-knit community that delights in stargazing during the cold winter on the open field beside our bar, observing the birds and mammals that visit our windows, and enjoying time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
