When most Imperial scholars picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enchanting, green campus alive with wildlife and plants rarely found on other grounds like South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct \u2013 every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a voice for this lesser-known segment of Imperial, I wish to showcase the student experience, activities, and community within our natural parkland campus situated in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse into Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor research facility, covering 77 hectares and hosting ecosystems including freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A straightforward query on iNaturalist, an app dedicated to mapping and sharing global biodiversity findings, reveals that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus, with an additional search on eBird indicating that 111 bird species have been observed thus far.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is also the backdrop for numerous long-term research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus predominantly hosts postgraduate students engaged in projects centered around ecology, conservation, and evolution. Many of us are affiliated with several clubs established at Silwood Park. Prominent examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 who are responsible for the chickens kept behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 who meet consistently to discuss selected readings<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 who oversee the plots in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 who coordinate nature walks and conservation-oriented activities for students at Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Being part of the wider Imperial student community, many of us also engage in activities of clubs based in South Kensington as well!<\/p>\n

    Additionally, we have informal sports clubs that participate in activities such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (which happens to be my personal favorite!), utilizing either the multi-use games area (MUGA) on campus or the indoor sports facilities available in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Alongside club activities and classes, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park features its own student council that organizes and manages these activities to maintain a dynamic and stimulating student life! Recently, we\u2019ve held the Silwood language exchange, in which our predominantly international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year festivities at the year\u2019s beginning, gathering together to prepare dumplings and couplets to welcome the new lunar year. Additionally, we\u2019ve seen community-organized parties to commemorate events from around the globe (like Carnival) or festivities held simply for the joy of celebration.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus, however, has to be the weekly pub quiz hosted by our student community. It\u2019s a Silwood tradition for the losers of the pub quiz to organize the next one, and I can proudly state I\u2019ve set the most quizzes this year. Despite my frequent defeats in these quizzes due to my limited general knowledge, there\u2019s always a good time to be had with great company and a refreshing pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute walk from the lively bustle of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has never seemed dull or lacking. Beyond the multitude of events and activities, we share a warm and inviting community comprising students from diverse backgrounds across the globe. We all share a passion for nature, cherish our stunning campus, and, more importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s company.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
