When students from Imperial envision Silwood Park, they picture a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus flourishing with exceptional flora and fauna, distinctly different from the scenes at South Kensington or White City. In many ways, they are spot on\u2014every depiction of Silwood Park holds true!<\/p>\n

As a representative of this less-publicized Imperial enclave, I aim to shed light on the student experience, events, and community within our natural parkland campus located in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

Welcome to Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park acts as Imperial\u2019s open-air laboratory, covering 77 hectares and showcasing habitats such as freshwater streams, lakes, an \u201cancient\u201d woodland, and expansive grasslands. A brief exploration on iNaturalist, an application for cataloging and sharing biodiversity observations worldwide among a network of naturalists, uncovers 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi recorded on the premises. Moreover, eBird indicates 111 bird species noted on campus.<\/p>\n

Notably, Silwood Park is home to several long-term field research initiatives, including the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project, both prominent on-site endeavors.<\/p>\n

Life as a Student at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus primarily accommodates postgraduate students dedicated to ecology, conservation, and evolution studies. We participate in various clubs stationed at Silwood Park, including:<\/p>\n

  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to chickens raised behind our dormitories<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 convening regularly to explore interesting books<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 arranging nature walks and conservation efforts for Silwood Park students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As members of the wider Imperial student body, many of us also engage in clubs situated in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have sports clubs such as badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), utilizing the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or indoor sports facilities in nearby towns like Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    In addition to club activities, we host numerous community-driven events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes events ensuring a lively student atmosphere. Recently, we hosted the Silwood language exchange, where our international community exchanged languages and cultures over several weeks, and our annual Chinese New Year celebration, where we made dumplings and couplets to usher in the new lunar year. We also organize community parties to honor global events (like Carnival) or simply to enjoy a good celebration.<\/p>\n

    My favorite event on campus is the weekly pub quiz, coordinated by our student body. It\u2019s a cherished Silwood tradition where the losing team from the last quiz is responsible for setting the next one, and I proudly hold the record for the most quizzes arranged this year. Despite often being defeated due to my weak general trivia knowledge, the fun with great company and a pint of beer is always guaranteed.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: My Second Home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it\u2019s a 30-minute stroll from the nearest town (such as the train station and closest village), life at Silwood Park is far from dull. Along with countless events, we enjoy a friendly, inviting community of students from all corners of the globe. We share a love for nature, our stunning campus, and each other\u2019s companionship. We\u2019re a tight-knit community that delights in stargazing during winter in the open field near our bar, observing birds and mammals right from our windows, and spending time with fellow nature enthusiasts.<\/p>\n

    Most evenings, I cook alongside my Indian friend who shares my passion for Asian cuisine and birdwatching. Often, we are joined by friends living just a minute away in nearby residence halls. After dinner, we engage in board games or watch movies together. Residing on Silwood Park Campus truly epitomizes a serene, tranquil, idyllic lifestyle. In winter, this is complemented by the comforting warmth of heaters throughout our residence halls and campus buildings.<\/p>\n
