When the majority of Imperial students picture Silwood Park, they see a vibrant, enigmatic, and verdant campus brimming with animals and plants rarely found at other locations such as South Kensington or White City. In many respects, they are correct\u2014each portrayal of Silwood Park is precise!<\/p>\n

As an advocate for this lesser-known segment of the Imperial community, I aim to emphasize student life, activities, and camaraderie at our natural parkland campus in Ascot, Berkshire.<\/p>\n

A glimpse into Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Silwood Park serves as Imperial\u2019s outdoor laboratory, covering 77 hectares and comprising habitats like freshwater streams, lakes, an “ancient” forest, and open grasslands. A simple query on iNaturalist, an application for mapping and sharing biodiversity observations with a global network of naturalists, shows that 1,436 species of plants, animals, and fungi have been recorded on campus. An additional search on eBird confirms that 111 bird species have been observed on campus up to now.<\/p>\n

More intriguingly, Silwood Park is home to numerous long-term field research initiatives, with the Nash\u2019s Field Experiment and the Blue Tit Project being among the more recognized studies conducted on-site.<\/p>\n

Student experience at Silwood Park<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The campus predominantly accommodates postgraduate students with an interest in ecology, conservation, and evolution projects. Many of us engage in various clubs within Silwood Park. Noteworthy examples include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Chicken Club \u2013 tending to the chickens raised behind our residence halls<\/li>\n
  • Book Club \u2013 regularly exploring books of interest from their reading list<\/li>\n
  • Gardening Club \u2013 overseeing the allotments in our community garden<\/li>\n
  • Conservation Club \u2013 planning nature walks and conservation-focused activities for students on Silwood Park Campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    As a part of the broader Imperial student body, many of us also engage in activities organized by clubs based in South Kensington!<\/p>\n

    Casually, we have clubs participating in sports like badminton, basketball, and pickleball (my personal favorite!), either on the multi-use games arena (MUGA) on campus or at indoor sports facilities in nearby towns such as Bracknell or Ascot.<\/p>\n

    Beyond club activities and classes, we host numerous community-led events on campus. Silwood Park has its own student council that organizes and supports these activities to foster a lively and engaging student experience! Recently, we held the Silwood language exchange, where our predominantly international community united to share languages and cultures over several weeks, and we also celebrated our annual Chinese New Year event at the beginning of the year, where everyone gathered to make dumplings and couplets to greet the new lunar year. We\u2019ve also enjoyed community-organized festivities celebrating various global events (like Carnival) or parties just for the joy of gathering.<\/p>\n

    Yet, my favorite campus event has to be the weekly pub quiz, hosted by our student community. It has become a part of Silwood culture that the quiz losers must set the subsequent quiz, and I can proudly say I\u2019ve organized the most quizzes this year. Even though I’ve lost countless pub quizzes due to my limited general trivia knowledge, there\u2019s always great fun to be had among good friends and a decent pint of beer.<\/p>\n

    Silwood Park: my second home<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Even though it is a 30-minute stroll from the lively atmosphere of civilization (like the train station and the nearest village), life at Silwood Park has always felt exciting and fulfilling. In addition to the myriad of events and activities, we have a friendly and welcoming community made up of students from all corners of the globe. We all cherish nature, appreciate our stunning campus grounds, and, more importantly, enjoy each other\u2019s company.
